On Typing...
I’m a very bad typist. I know, I’m such a sinner. I break all the rules.
Even though I type pretty swiftly I’m very bad about typing “by the book.” Over the years and despite the best attempts of Mavis Beacon, I’ve developed some shortcuts and accumulated several “habits” which keep me from doing it right.
For instance, I use my left ring finger to type Q’s and Z’s, and use my left pinkie only for A’s and for hitting the shift button. I essentially never use the right shift key, even for exclamation points (left pinkie SHIFT, left right finger1!1!!!). While I use my right thumb to insert spaces, my left thumb never touches the spacebar (apparently several people I know have this habit as well). And sometimes, when I’m typing fast, I’ll use my left pointer finger to hit the “C” key, which is just plain odd.
All of these habits cause me to wonder two things:
- How much faster could I be if I typed correctly, and didn’t make habitual “mistakes”?
- Do you think people from our parent’s generation had to take “Typewriter class” in school, to be educated in how to type on those things? …because I’ve tried, AND IT’S REALLY HARD, DADGUMMIT.
Do you guys have any weird typing habits or thoughts on “Typewriter class?”
